MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto

PUCCINI: Messa di Gloria

WAGNER: Die Meistersinger

BRAHMS: Song of Destiny

This exciting collaboration between Basingstoke’s choral society and symphony orchestra includes some highly popular musical gems. The concert opens with the dramatic overture from Wagner’s comic opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which is followed by Brahms’s short but powerful Song of Destiny using the combined choral and orchestral forces. The soloist in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor will be Rebecca Totterdell, the young and talented leader of the orchestra, who has already performed several of the major concertos in the Anvil. This concerto was Mendelssohn’s last large orchestral composition and now forms an important part of the solo violin repertoire, being one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos of all time.

Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, a Mass composed for orchestra and four-part choir with tenor, bass and baritone soloists, had its first performance in Lucca in 1880. However, the Credo had already been written and performed in 1878 and was initially conceived by Puccini as a self-contained work. Puccini never published the full manuscript of the Messa and, although well received at the time, it was not performed again until 1952.
