Updated: Feb 14

The orchestra has revealed that the "brilliant and versatile" Jiaxin Lloyd Webber will perform Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto at The Anvil on Saturday, February 22 at 7.30pm. Lloyd Webber has had a distinguished career, including a role as the principal cello of the Auckland Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed major works by composers such as Dvořák, Elgar, Lalo, and Tchaikovsky (Rococo Variations). Lloyd Webber has often worked with her husband, Julian Lloyd Webber, and their 2013 recording, Tale of Two Cellos, became Naxos’ best-selling album of all time, topping the UK classical charts for weeks.

In an interesting twist of fate, Julian Lloyd Webber was the first classical musician to perform at The Anvil when it opened 30 years ago; now, his wife is set to take the same stage.

The evening will feature a diverse programme of music, starting with Shostakovich's Festival Overture, a lively tribute to the 37th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Next is Delius's Summer Evening, a tranquil piece that evokes a dreamlike atmosphere.Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 will also be performed, showcasing the expressive power of the cello. Stephen Scotchmer's Overture to Perth, inspired by the composer's 2023 holiday in Australia, will follow. This vibrant piece blends sea shanties with Aboriginal-inspired themes, perfectly capturing the essence of Perth.

The concert will conclude with Schumann's Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish", a musical tribute to the River Rhine.Schumann’s symphony portrays the beauty and character of the Rhineland, his adopted home.

Tickets for this musical evening are available now through The Anvil box office, either online at anvilarts.org.uk or by phone at 01256 844244.
