Powerful Performance of Dona Nobis Pacem Resonates at Petersfield Festival

Ann Henshaw

Under the baton of renowned choral conductor Paul Spicer, the orchestra delivered a stirring performance of Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem at the Petersfield Festival. The concert, featuring the combined voices of the Fernhurst and Petersfield Choral Societies, brought the audience an emotionally charged experience.

Vaughan Williams, who served as a medical orderly in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, was deeply affected by his experiences on the battlefield, including at the Somme. Dona Nobis Pacem reflects both the horrors of war and the looming threat of the Second World War, culminating in a hopeful vision of peace and reconciliation among nations.

From within the orchestra, the sheer power of the piece was undeniable, its emotional weight deeply felt—especially in today’s world. Williams’ resounding plea, "Grant us peace," remains as urgent and poignant as ever.
